     The Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia is the oldest marine and fisheries research institute in Poland. The SFI is an organizational unit of the Polish fisheries administrational and conducts scientific research in the fields of fishery biology, fishery oceanography and marine ecology, processing technology, food and environment chemistry, and fishery economics. The SFI also acts in an advisory capacity for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

     International cooperation is of fundamental importance to the SFI, and the institute is an active participant in projects coordinated by the international Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) and the European Union Framework Programmes. It also conducts research indispensable for the realization by Poland of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy, including the Polish National Programme for the Collection of Fisheries Data.

     For many years the institute has participated in research projects financed by the European Union, conducted its own research and development projects, provided services for foreign and Polish institutions and enterprises, and written expert assessments for government administrations.
